Create a Website with an HTML Editor

I'm going to give you my true opinion of conventional HTML editors. I've pulled my hair out trying to find one that is easy enough for a first time web author to use.

The problem with most conventional HTML editors is that they have too many features.

Now, features are great. But they are just hard as hell for beginners to figure out when all they are trying to do is build their first web page using the tool.

That's why I put together a tutorial that uses a simple text editor.

If you are going to try to use one of these editors learn to code by hand first. Then when you can write your one code, you'll be ready to pull your hair out trying to learn to use one of these contraptions.

Trying to produce concise code is one of the biggest problems.

When all I want is a simple body tag with no attributes, I have to delete all the extra crap that the editor adds. Tables are the same way. I don't need a table wizard, "I need clean code!!!".

I got so fed up with these things that I got my self a copy of MS Visual Basic and programmed my own personal HTML editor.

Now I can produce simple code and add my style sheet and go from there.

A simple thing like saving a file, can be a hassle with most of these monstrosities. You'll save 2 or 3 versions of the same page and not even know it and God only knows which one you saved your last changes on.

I've been building websites for over ten years. If I have are hard time figuring out how to use one of these things, think of what a picnic you're in for.

WYSIWYG editors are even worse. They're great if you don't mind building a web page that is 70% code and 30% text. Some of them are even worse. And trying to find an error or getting an element to align properly - Well Just Forget IT!!

I'll recommend a couple of free editors here in a moment, but my advise to first timers is this:
Write out your favorite clean code snippets in NotePad. Save them in a txt file. Then when you are building your web pages with NotePad just copy a code snip from your list and paste it into your HTML page.

If you exhaust the code examples from the tag glossary, go to my HTML tutorial at www.createafreewebsite.net. Cut and paste to your hearts content.

Free HTML Editors

I only recommend these editors if you are already coding your pages by hand. If you are one of those people that already knows everything, The Unteachable Sort, then go ahead and try your luck.

NoteTab Light
The light version is freeware. I do provide a tutorial, that may or may not help you to set it up.

Arachnophilia
This is a great free editor with entirely too many features. You have to run it from the jar file. Would make a great editor if you can figure out how to turn off half the features it provides.

Be sure to read everything from the download page and then when you are completely confused, download it and try to figure out how to run it.

Webbuilder
This is my personal editor. Runs on Windows 98, XP and Vista. I've built more than 8 websites with this tool. One of them is over 900 web pages.
