Create a Site with HTML

The Browser

A browser is a tool that is used to view web pages.

Though there are many brands and types the most popular to date is Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

When we last checked MSIE was used by about 45% of our visitors. Mozilla was second at about 40%. The remaining 5% was divided among Opera and some other less known brands.

When designing web pages you should test your pages in different browsers. This is especially important if you use Cascading Style Sheets, as each browser will display and interpret them differently.

Web pages should also be designed so that surfers who use text only modes on their browsers can navigate your website without difficulty. This means using image alt tags properly and sometimes adding the title attribute to your hyperlinks.

Viewing an HTML Page in Your Browser

One of the most common problems that newbies encounter when building their first web pages is finding a page with the browser after they save it. Pay attention when you save your first pages.

One of the best ways to locate your web pages with the browser is to save them all in a special folder. Create a folder on your C:\ drive named htdocs and every time you save a page save it in that folder.

How to Create an htdocs folder

Vista
Click Start then click Computer
Double click the C: drive icon.
Click File click New click Folder
Locate the New Folder that is created and rename it htdocs

Windows XP

Click My Computer icon on desktop
Double click Local Disk C: icon
Click File click New click Folder
Locate the New Folder that is created and rename it htdocs

Windows 98

Click My Computer icon on desktop
Double click Local_disk (C:) icon
Click File click New click Folder
Locate the New Folder that is created and rename it htdocs

Note: To rename the New Folder click on the text (New Folder) until it highlights, then type htdocs to replace it.

Locating the htdocs folder with the Browser

Most browsers have a File tab or link somewhere in the upper left corner of the tool.

If your IE browser does not, you'll need to activate the menu bar. Click Tools click Menu Bar.

To navigate to a page in a folder:
Internet Explorer
Click File then Open then Browse. Navigate to the folder and then the desired document.

Firefox
Click File then Open File. Navigate to the folder and then the desired document.
